Animal Identification and Registration System Using RFID

Sferacarta has developed the following system. ZeeDimension was the local support for MoA in Jordan

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders.

An RFID tag is an object that can be applied to or incorporated into a product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification and tracking using radio waves. Some tags can be read from several meters away and beyond the line of sight of the reader.

Background Information

Jordan’s national agricultural livestock herds and flocks comprise approximately 72,000 cattle, 1.9 million sheep, and 0.6 million goats. There are approximately 1,250 cattle farm/holdings and 30,000 sheep / goat owner / holdings. National poultry statistics record a total of approximately 36 million poultry on approximately 2,600 registered farms/holdings. There are approximately 40 livestock markets, 6 livestock border inspection posts and 16 slaughter houses (cattle, sheep and goats) and 10 poultry slaughter houses. is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders.

Jordan has 12 Governorates, each of which has a Jordanian Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) Governorate (administrative) office and a number of sub Governorate offices. The MoA head office is located in Amman.

The system is a multi-language system introduces a comprehensive centrally based national database managed by the MoA, which hold details of each farm/holding and its livestock for the species outlined above. Each farm/holding had a unique number officially given by the MoA.

Species RFID's

1. Cattle - Each animal is identified by an identification tag in each ear. A drop tag with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), which contain the Jordan country identifier (JO), the holding number, a unique individual animal number and check letter in both alphanumerical and RFID format, the other ear had a smaller tag which includes the animal’s alphanumeric number (non RFID).

Cattle identification numbers is recorded on the database with the animal’s description (Species, Date of Birth, Color / Breed and Sex etc.), at time of registration / first vaccination by MoA staff.

2. Sheep and Goats - Each animal is identified by a single tag in one ear (non RFID), bearing the farm/holding number and capable of holding an individual animal number.

3. Poultry - The farm/holding number is on records accompanying the birds, whenever they leave the farm/holding for slaughter, sale etc...

When a tag is become lost, a new tag is inserted by the MoA at next farm visit. The system is capable to link the replacement tag to the animals original tag recorded in the data base.

The tags are manufactured based on the international standard specification and specifically conformant to EC2629/97.

The data on the Animal identification computer system is downloaded on a holding basis to the hand held RFID reader, In advance any detailed routine applied will be temporary recorded on the hand held computer.

The system is allowing the information in the hand held computers / RFID readers, including details of vaccinations given and other animal treatments and any identification modifications, to be uploaded on a daily or weekly basis into the Animal Identification Computer System at each MoA Governorate office or sub office. Each Governorate office and major sub office is provided with a dedicated Animal I/D Personal Computer.

The System is provided with computers linked over a secure ADSL connection into the Central Database Computer.
